Chapter Seven

Mordecai hadn’t been able to control his reaction when Jeffrey had begun mentally broadcasting his desires. His body had responded just from the images he was getting from his human. When his stella guida had asked a straightforward question, Mordecai hadn’t been able—or willing—to lie to him.

To his relief, Jeffrey hadn’t freaked out.

Well, not yet, anyway.

Mordecai had understood Jeffrey’s request for an avenue of escape. Eventually, he would have to tell his human that, since he’d started their bond, he would be able to track him down no matter where he went. They were connected on a soul-deep level.

And when I complete the bond, Jeffrey will develop some of my gifts.

So much to explain.

They rode in silence, but Mordecai found it companionable as opposed to awkward. He continued to hold Jeffrey’s hand, enjoying the simple interaction. His human’s palm and fingers were work-roughened and felt good against his own callouses.

Arriving at the ranch, Mordecai turned the SUV into the driveway. “I understand this is a beautiful place,” he murmured, glancing at the landscape hidden in shadows. “I haven’t done much exploring, yet, but I look forward to doing that with you.”

“And the owners of the ranch don’t care that you’re bringing a guest onto their property?” Jeffrey furrowed his brows as he glanced from Mordecai to the window and back again. “Aren’t there additional fees for more people and waivers and shit at a place like this?”

Mordecai frowned. “Waivers?”

“Yeah.” Jeffrey focused on him. “Didn’t you sign a waiver?” When Mordecai hesitated, Jeffrey pressed, “You know. A form indicating that if you get injured, you won’t sue them?”

Shaking his head, Mordecai admitted, “I did not.” As he took the right fork in the driveway, passing the barns and other cabins, he mused, “Perhaps for humans that would be necessary.”

“Humans?” Jeffrey jumped on Mordecai’s slip. “Uh, care to explain that?”

Mordecai nodded once. “You asked how I could possibly read someone’s mind.” He spotted Malakai and Murdoch sitting on the pair of rockers on the porch of his borrowed cabin. Once Mordecai had parked the SUV and shut it off, he pulled the keys from the ignition. Turning to Jeffrey, he offered them to his stella guida. Mordecai held the human’s gaze as he took them and murmured, “Jeffrey, my stella guida, I am not human.” Still holding his attention, Mordecai used his free hand to indicate his friends on the porch. “They are not human, either.”

With his keen eyesight, Mordecai saw the blood drain from Jeffrey’s face. His jaw clenched. His Adam’s apple bobbed. When Jeffrey licked his lips, Mordecai followed the movement, wanting very much to engage in his first kiss.

The scent of fear and uncertainty filling the cab stayed his desire.

“Not human,” Jeffrey whispered hoarsely. “So what are you?” His attention darted to the pair who were now standing on the porch. “What are they?”

“You are completely safe with me, Jeffrey,” Mordecai stated instead of answering. “Completely safe with them. None of us would ever hurt you.”

“You didn’t answer the question,” Jeffrey accused.
